ESPN BASEBALL RULES QUIZ: TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE: http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/quiz/_/id/4979/do-know-mlb-rules
FAB 50 RULES: The rules unique to the Fab 50 are voted on and approved by all managers. Please review all rules on the rules page. Except for our unique rules, the league uses the IHSA rule book since all our umpires are patched for IHSA baseball games. All stats will be recorded for official games with incomplete innings that are not suspended.
OBSTRUCTION & BLOCKING THE PLATE: Fielders cannot block the base in anticipation of receiving the ball. Unless in possession of the ball, catchers cannot stradle or block the pathway of the runner as he/she is attempting to score.. The old comment, "I was making a play on the ball" does not justify blocking the base. Umpires have been instructed to call the runners safe due to obstruction. WATCH THIS PLAY: PHILLIES VS. ROCKIES
-Unless catcher in possession of ball, catcher CANNOT block pathway of runner trying to score.
-Catchers CANNOT block home plate anticipating possession of the ball.
-Catchers CANNOT straddle home plate, which is considered blocking the plate.
-For a play at the plate, catchers are advised to move into fair territory in front of the plate.
-If possible, the home plate umpire will also advise the catcher to “get off the plate.”
DR. PRESTON WOLIN ON 670 THE SCORE: Dr. Wolin, director and founder of the Center for Athletic Medicine, and an original member of the Fab 50 Baseball League, discusses the rash of elbow injuries in the major leagues with Boers & Bernstein. Listen to Wolin-670 The Score.mp3 Our thanks to WSCR for this interview.
Weather Conditions: The Commissioner decides if games will be canceled, delayed or shortened due to inclement weather and/or field conditions. The Commissioner reserves the right to cancel all games on game day if there are weather or safety concerns. After the first pitch of a game, the decision to cancel a game will be made jointly by the umpires and managers. Umpires cannot cancel a game due to weather or field conditions once a game has started without the consent of the two managers. All parties should check weather radar and use common sense in deciding if a game should be canceled or delayed. After a delay, all parties must agree if the conditions are right for the game to continue. If lightning occurs, the game will be delayed for 15 minutes, and delayed another 15 minutes after subsequent sighting(s). The 2H/30 minutes time limit at Trinity will be observed regardless of weather conditions.
Medical Coverage:If you are injured in a Fab 50 game, please ask your manager to fill out the claim form. The league commissioner must sign the form, and the injured player is required submit the claim.
Fab 50 Games
The Fab 50 Baseball League is a highly-competitive league for older kids who still love to play baseball on the field of dreams. No drama or politics allowed in this league! We are all about baseball, fun, friendship and sportsmanship.
Most games are played at the Trinity International University baseball field at I-94 Tollway and Half Day Road (Route 22) in Bannockburn. For more information, please visit the DIRECTIONS page. Weekend traffic is minimal and the campus is only two blocks east of I-94. The remainder are played at Meadowhill Park, 1479 Maple Ave. in Northbrook.
TIU is an alcohol-free and tobacco-free campus, so no alcohol or tobacco products are to be used on campus. There is also no smoking. Please respect the game and all property at Trinity International University. No pets are allowed on campus.
Each player must register and agree to the league rules and waivers. Please visit the registration page to fill out the form. A new player entering the league is free to play with any team, while an existing league player is free to play with any team only if released by his or her team. The league will make every effort to place players released from existing teams, or place them on the substitute players’ roster.
Registration fees will NOT be paid on the website, but will be collected by the team managers. No one is allowed to play without paying the league registration fee. If a team uses an ineligible player, that team will forfeit the game. Registration fees cannot be refunded after the start of the season.
New players must be at least 45-years-old in the 2017 calendar year in order to be eligible to play in the Fab 50 Baseball League. The league is committed to striving for parity and balance for each team. Under special circumstances, the league may approve underage players (ages 40-44) in order to achieve competitive balance, but all underage players (ages 40-to-49) are NOT eligible to pitch unless designated by league rules. All teams must have a minimum of 16 players on the roster, except when allowed by the commissioner.
